Frequently Asked Questions

How can I join the Flying club?

For info on joining IYFC, check out the Join IYFC page for details on eligibility, and instructions for submitting a member application form.

Can I do flight training in the flying club planes?

Currently, the flying club is not setup to allow primary flight training in its fleet for insurance reasons so you will first need to obtain your PPL. However, once you have your PPL, you can continue you advanced flight training and get your next rating with the club planes. Many of our members are continuing on for their IFR or commercial rating both of which require significant flight hours. The club planes are well equipped to support those activities and help you in reaching your next aviation milestone.

What does it cost to join the club and how much are the monthly dues?

Detailed info on joining costs and monthly dues can be found on the Join IYFC page.

How are rental rates billed?

Rental rates are based on Hobbs time. There is an oil pressure switch connected to an hour meter (called a Hobbs meter) that records engine run-time. The hourly rate is a “wet” price meaning fuel is included in the price.

What is the policy regarding fueling before returning the plane?

The planes are rented wet, so you will be reimbursed if you fuel the plane. Be sure to fill out the Fuel Reimbursement Form and submit your receipts (Link to the form in FlightCircle Dashboard). We asked that you fill up the plane within an hour of your return flight so that the plane is ready for the next flight. Note that fuel reimbursements are currently limited to $7.80 per gallon (help keep our costs lower by fueling up at airports with lower fuel prices).

Do I need to carry renters Insurance?

The club insures its planes to help cover costs in the event that an aircraft is severely damaged. However, you may be responsible for covering up to $5000 which is the insurance deductible. In other words, if you bend metal, you could owe the club as much as $5000. The club insurance does not cover you or your passengers and you will be responsible for flying with appropriate insurance. We highly encourage you carry at least a Non-Owned Aircraft Insurance Policy that covers damages to non-owned aircraft of up to $5000. These policies typically include liability and medical coverage as well. A low time pilot can usually find a policy for under $180 dollars per year.

If you are a member of EAA/AOPA, check their respective coverage options as they both provide member benefit insurance discounts: EAA Non-Owned Aircraft Insurance and AOPA / AssuredPartners Non-Owned Aircraft Insurance

What is the policy regarding taking the plane on overnight or longer trips?

There’s a 2-hour min charge for overnight usage. The purpose of the minimum flight-time policy is to balance plane availability while encouraging long distance and cross-country flights which make require several days. We’re still trying to work the details out on this policy but for now if you fly to Bend and stay there overnight and back the following day, you will likely not incur any additional charges as its about an hour each way. This policy will not apply for an emergency (i.e. if the plane is having issues at a destination airport, don’t try to fly it back, we’ll figure out the best course of action)

Can I rent an airplane from the Club and be instructed by anyone?

No, members can only receive instruction from approved flight instructors. The instructor must have an affiliation with the flying club.

Can I give instruction in a club plane?

As a regular member, you cannot give instruction in our club plane Only approved flight instructors can provide flight instruction in our planes and this has to do with our club bylaws as well as insurance coverage as the planes are not covered for primary instruction. If you are interested in becoming an approved instructor for our flying club to help members with reaching their next ratings, please contact us.
